Foreshortened hand

having had quite a break from the drawing with study taking up a lot of time, I’ve got back to it all today. So, today’s task? First balance your clear plastic view finder on your up-turned hand, close one eye, keep dead still and draw on round the image on your viewfinder using a dry wipe marker (or a nice water-soluble felt tip if you want something less chunky in your mitt!) Hey presto one perfectly proportioned 3D looking hand. Easy.

Next, cover a drawing page with a light shading from a graphite stick, or in my case a graphite pencil cos I bought the wrong thing…. works fine but not quite as good as the real thing. Then copy your image off the viewfinder onto the page. Finally, put your hand back into the same position you had it in to copy it and finish off your drawing with all the little bits of detail. Way-hey a realistic looking hand!

I was sceptical about this, the book says how you will be delighted by how wonderful your drawing will look yada yada and I thought u-huh? well lets just see shall we…. but you know what? I was dead impressed! It really did look like my hand! and it really did look like it was 3D!

Aprilia gave it an A+ and, as my best critic I’ll take that as she thought it looked dead good too!

left hand

How cute does it get?

knitted “jeans” for toddlers – I *need* to do a pair of these!!!

still here!

doing a bit of knitting , vent bonnets at the moment, and a bit of doodling but not as much as I could be doing.  Hoping to get back to the daily doodle over the next week or so but needing more sleep than normal which is eating up my doodle time!

faces or vase?

today’s task was to draw complete a half drawn picture of two profile faces that leave a gap that looks like a vase in the middle (know hte one I mean?)  The idea was to trace over the already drawn side a few times then do the mirror.  Whilst tracing and drawing you were supposed to name all the parts of the face.  This was to show you how the left – wordy – side of the brain trips you up when you are trying to do right – arty -sided tasks.  Naturally enough though, being Dyxie my left brain stumped off in a corner and sulked refusing to provide name labels for any of the bits I was drawing.  Aparently this is good, this means I am able to lt my arty right side get on wtih drawing without the left side poking it’s nose in.

Aprilia also drew today and did a lovely scene with a rainbow, sun and rain.  Wondering if I should do the pushy parent bit and let her enter it for The Works art comp.

Brace yourselves…

I’ve started the drawing book.  I’m aiming to doa  bit every day and to muse (or twitter – take your pick) about what I read/what I did.  So today – “pre-instruction drawings”

The idea is to draw something as a benchmark so you can look back and see progress but also so you can see what you can already do.  First there’s a self portrait, I drew something recognisably human wearing glasses but I’m not sure who it was!  Definitely wasn’t me but hey ho, recognisable is a damned good starting point.   Then you draw your hand, I think I did okay on that, again it was recognisable as a hand although the fingers were a bit odd.  Then a person from memory which was awful, no idea who it was meant to be at all!!!  Not even sure it was human!  Aparently that’s because we don’t remember in that much fine detail.  Finally you draw the corner of a room.  The only corner that I could see in the room I was in was by the door so I drew the doorway complete with door open towards me.  This was the easiest one, it’s all straight lines and a few shadows so no real terror or traumas and it was definitely a good likeness (right down to the awful wallpaper on the landing    )

So all in all a good start, a bit of confidence is in danger of creeping in which is a novelty.  I may start scanning in and posting up the pics once I get my new scanner next week.   May even have to pay for a proper Flickr account so I can hvae more than  what ever the rationed number of pictures is – actually I need to do that anyway as I can’t see all the baby pics any more and I miss them!

free pattern drafting software (sewing)

I’m just downloading this, no idea if it will work under Linux but I shall see and hey, it’s no huge loss if not as it’s free!

knitting how to videos

I’ve been directed to this site to see how to do a better finish off for my socks so that the toe is smoother.  It’s called “kitchener stitch” and is one of those “must lern it some time cos it’s supposed to be good” things that I tend to not get round to!  The instructions adn vid are really easy to follow so I suspect I’m going to give it a go.  THere are also stacks of other vids though that also look to be useful for other bits of clever knitting.

Mary Mary Quite contrary…

how does your garden grow adn all that. Well, here’s how mine is growing just now.

strawberrys

As you walk onto the patio you can see the strawberries which are getting nicely leafy but not doing much else yet. They are jumbo ones when they start fruiting though. Behind that there is the dandelion bed, perfect for feeding the guinea pigs (or that’s my excuse anyway!)

berry patch

Just next to that is currently a berry patch with cranberries and a plan for bilberries and/or blueberries. They may be moving htough as it’s not teribly sunny until summer in that corner whihc could be why they are so damned straggly. I cloched them this spring for a month or so to get them nice and warm, it seemed to help but now they are flowering they need to be out in the air. At the back of that bed is our rhodi which has just finished flowering so you don’t get the wow factor that it was 2 weeks ago. Duke threatened to rip that out one year, I threatened him with sleeping in the potting shed so he re-thought!

straggly cranberry

and just to prove there is something in that bed….. see? a cranberry plant!

rhubarb

moving round from the berry patch we have the rhubarb which is yum! I need to remember to shovel a bit more organic stuff round it this year as the soil is getting a bit depleated and it’s showing in the quality.

peas growing up twiggy/leafy sticks

The next 2 beds are empty but then up against the compost box we hvae peas growing up some prunings from next door’s bush, you are supposed to use twiggy sticks, I figured leafy sticks would do the same job!

bean frame

Over the other side of the garden is the bean frame with runner beans legging up hte strings and the bonus of a couple of potato plants that are proof that you really need to leave your compost to rot down totally before spreading it out! You can also see the grapes growing up the shed.

grapes!

and if you use a bit of imagination there’s a bunch of buds here and there!

I’ve been given some sprout plants to go in one of the beds so I’ll be doing that this evening, once it’s a bit cooler.  I’ll need to add another loop into the leaky pipe system to cover the bed they are going in – last year we had awful crops because just as everything was getting going we went on holiday for a week adn it was a really hot dry spell so th is year we grabbed leaky pipe when it was on offer in Lidl and I’m hoping for great things!

watercolour links

I’m doing that link dump thing again!

About watercolour painting – links’r'us, will need a few years to work though I suspect!

Video of water colour artist in action - using a hairdryer to speed things up…. why did I not think of that!

how to paint reflections in water – I *need* to be able to do this for a painting I hvae in my head of a wonderful sunset over water that I saw filmed on some travelogue type TV prog ages ago!

painting from dark to light – intriguing, wonder how on earth you do that with translucent paints then!

Water colour on-line tutorials

About childparent art links – I do love the “About” pages, htey seem to ahve one for everything!  This looks to have a lot of child friendly art tutes linked.

 Children’s art links page – on someone’s blog, now there’s a shock!

Freemania – links to all sorts of free tutes etc

Now all I need is a few extra hours a day to work through some of these!  I have found that I can get 24 sheet watercolour pads from The Works for £1:50 though so I feel less “protective” of my precious supply!

Tunisian Crochet Tiny Angel Gown

For a 1-2 lb preemie

using 4 ply yarn in white and a small amount of a contrast colour (that’s UK 4 ply)  3mm crochet hook (larger if your stitches are not soft and drapey) and a Tunisian hook size 8mm (I think, it’s not marked up but that’s what it feels closest to compared with my other hooks)   You don’t absolutely need to use a Tunisian hook but the stitches will be very squashed on a normal one.

Bodice

Using white yarn and the 3mm hook chain 30 + 3 (chaining up for next row)

Row 1 – Working in half trebles (US half doubles)  start with 3rd chain from hook,

work 4 stitches, work 1 htr, 1ch, 1htr into next stitch to turn corner,

work next 5 stitches then  1 htr, 1ch, 1htr into next stitch to turn corner

Work next 8 stitches then 1 htr, 1ch, 1htr into next stitch to turn corner

work next 5 stitches then 1 htr, 1ch, 1htr into next stitch to turn corner

work remaining 4 stitches

that’s the fiddly row done now, the rest is more straightforward honestly!

row 2 to 4 – chain up and turn, work in htr in each stitch, repeated the (1 htr, 1ch, 1htr ) in the centre of the previous row’s turning cluster.  At the end of row 4 break yarn
Make Sleeves

If you lay out your piece you will see that there is a back (the 2 very short pieces will form the back as this gown opens at the back), front and 2 sides.  Choose a side and, with the right side facing you, use your 3mm hook to draw 2 loops up from each stitch onto your Tunisian hook (you need to use the smaller hook, the Tunisian hook won’t fit!)

Work 4 rows in basic Tunisian stitch  then break yarn.  you don’t need to do any “cast off” row, that comes next.

Do not sew up the sleeve seams, they are left open to allow easy dressing.

Using contrast yarn and the 3mm hook, start at the beginning of the sleeve edge (where it joins the bodice) and slip stitch up one side of the work to the last sleeve row, work a gather across the “cuff” by catching 2 front posts with each slip stitch across the cuff then continue down the other side of the sleeve.

Turn, *ch 3, ss into next st*  repeat all the way round for a picot edging  (optional, you could leave this row off or just work 1 row in a stitch you like back round)

Repeat for the other side.

Complete bodice

Rejoin white yarn at the back of the bodice, with right side facing you, work in htr to sleeve, ch2, fold bodice and sleeve then continue to work stitches across the front of the gown, ch 2 under second sleeve and work to end.

Ch2 and turn, work back round, placing 2 htr into ch 2 space under armholes

Skirt

Using 3mm hook, with right side of work facing you, pull up 2 loops from each stitch onto Tunisian hook

Work for 12″ and break yarn.

Starting at the back of the neck, work round entire garment in slip stitch using contrast colour, working through the front post of the last row of your skirt.  Work back in ch3, slip stitch as for sleeves or other decorative stitch if you prefer.

finishing

Thread ribbon or crocheted chains through the sleeves just before the cuffs to allow the sleeves to be closed once the gown is on.  Sew ribbons or crochet chains back of the gown at the neck, waist and 1 or 2 places down the skirt.

Bonnet

Chain 32 using 3mm hook and white.  Slip last stitch onto Tunisian hook and use the 3mm hook to assist you working the 1st row (this gives a nice neat “cast on” row)

Work 8 rows then begin decrease

dec row 1 pick up loops as normal but when working back, *work 4, work next 2 loops together* across row

row 2,  pick up loops as normal but when working back, *work 3, work next 2 loops together* across row

row 3, pick up loops as normal but when working back, *work 2, work next 2 loops together* across row

row 4, pick up loops as normal but when working back, *work 1, work next 2 loops together* across row

row 5, pick up loops as normal but when working back, * work  2 loops together* across row

row 6, use 3mm hook to pick up loops instead of Tunisian hook, draw thread through all loops on hook in 1 sweep, pull snug and fasten off leaving a long tail.

Use tail to sew up back of bonnet to first decrease row.

Trim with contrast yarn as for gown pattern and sew on crochet chains or ribbons at the front to fasten.
